Summary
The Steam Thruster One is a flight-proven, water-powered, electrothermal propulsion system specifically designed for CubeSats and Small Satellites.
The system features a tailored design and manufacturing approach that allows for customization, to meet a wide range of different mission requirements. The specifications are given for a representative 2U propulsion unit.
The Steam Thruster One uses just low-pressure water as the main propellant. This results in a safe, non-toxic, and easy-to-handle propulsion solution that can be efficiently integrated into any satellite.
The Steam Thruster One has a nominal thrust of 6mN at 20W, however higher thrust is achievable on request if more resources are available. Because of its simple design, the propulsion system does not cause any RF or magnetic interference.
Typical use cases include:
- orbit adjustments
- constellation management
- collision avoidance
- de-orbiting
The Steam Thruster One is currently TRL8 and reached flight heritage in 2023. Three propulsion systems were successfully tested in space with a 100% success rate.
